ANILE & C.C.R. AWARD

Principal Guidelines
The Angelo Marcello Anile Association and the Consorzio Catania Ricerche announce the creation of a prize in honour of the late Prof. Angelo Marcello Anile, to commemorate his scientific achievements. One prize will be awarded each year for a PhD thesis written in English and submitted in an Italian university, concerning a topic that bridges the gap between mathematics and its applications. Work that uses advanced mathematics and/or invents new mathematical tools in order to solve applied problems from economics, engineering, science and technology is particularly appropriate. The work will be evaluated on the basis of the quality of the mathematics and its impact on the application.

The Prize Fund
Annual funds for this prize are contributed by the Angelo Marcello Anile Association and the Consorzio Catania Ricerche.

Eligibility
The award will usually be made on a yearly basis starting from the academic year 2009/2010 and it will be extensively advertised. However, the period for which applications for this first award will be open is extended to being between 1st July 2008 and 30th June 2010. The candidate must have completed his/her doctoral dissertation and all other requirements for his/her doctorate during the period running from three years prior to the award date up to one year prior to the award date (i.e. from 30th June 2007 to 30th June 2009 in the case of the first award).

Deadline for application: 30th June 2009 (post office stamp as proof) in the case of the first award.

Prize Committee
A committee composed of people nominated by both of the associations will select the successful candidate.

Selection Procedures
Applications should be made using the attached application form accompanied by:

1. A copy of the thesis
2. A curriculum vitae
3. A brief report/recommendation from the supervisor (no more than two pages). This should include a summary of the PhD thesis, placing it within the context of its contribution to the associated research field and containing an assessment of the balance of input from the student, the supervisor and any other people involved regarding the basic ideas and strategy for the work, the development and use of necessary techniques and the interpretation of the results.
4. At least two recommendation letters from well-known researchers.

A pdf file containing the application form and all of the required attachments should be e-mailed to asso.ama@dmi.unict.it at the same time as hard-copies of all of the documents are sent by regular mail. Proof of the date of posting should be retained, since applications postmarked after the deadline will be deemed ineligible.

Notification of the Award
The result of the competition will be announced on 31st March of each year by the presidents of the Angelo Marcello Anile Association and the Consorzio Catania Ricerche. The announcement will appear on the websites of both organisations.

If it considers that no thesis reaches the standard required, the Selection Committee may decide not to award the prize in any given year.

Prize Award Date
The award will be made by 30th June of each year, starting in 2010. If no prize is awarded then, the first award date will be moved to 30th June of the following year.

Description of the Award
The award will consist of:

• A citation certificate

• A cash award of € 5000

• Reasonable travel expenses to Catania, which will be paid by the Consorzio Catania Ricerche; the winner will also be given free life membership of the Angelo Marcello Anile Association (as an ordinary member).

Award Presentation
The presidents of the two institutions will present the award to the recipient during an official event held in Catania.
